OBD-II fault code

U3540: High Voltage System Interlock Circuit N High

What it means

HVIL loop N voltage above expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The HVIL verifies that high-voltage connectors and covers are properly engaged. The control module monitors loop N voltage; this code sets when the signal is higher than expected, which can happen if the loop is open and the module interprets the interlock as unsafe.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Interlock loop open
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and scan all modules for HVIL and communication codes, checking whether the fault appears alongside other loop faults.
  2. Review loop N live status or voltage and compare it with the manufacturer's specification for the recorded operating conditions.
  3. With the high-voltage system safely disabled under the prescribed procedure, visually inspect accessible loop N connectors for incomplete seating and the harness for breaks or damage.
  4. Have a qualified technician test loop N continuity and locate any open circuit using the manufacturer's service procedure.
  5. If loop N is intact, check gateway communication routing and CAN termination only when network codes or test results indicate a broader network problem.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat a loop N connector if inspection confirms it was loose.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of loop N wiring.
  • Replace a damaged connector or terminal that prevents circuit continuity.
  • Correct gateway routing or CAN termination only if tests identify that as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the vehicle displays a high-voltage warning or enters reduced-power mode, because the interlock fault may cause high-voltage operation to stop. Do not attempt to reconnect or probe high-voltage components yourself.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
