What it means
The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart throttle/pedal position sensor F. The ECM loses one of the redundant pedal channels and reverts to a fail-safe pedal map.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Throttle/pedal position channel F is a networked redundant input used by the engine controller to check driver demand. This code sets when channel F stops sending messages, leading the controller to disregard that input and use a fail-safe pedal strategy.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related network or throttle codes to identify other devices affected at the same time.
- Check live data for channel F's communication status and reading alongside the other pedal channels while slowly operating the pedal with the vehicle stationary.
- Inspect channel F's connector and bus wiring for corrosion, loose pins, water, abrasion, or a break near the harness or pedal assembly.
- Verify the sensor or module power and ground according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the channel F bus wiring for opens or shorts, then evaluate the channel F sensor or module if the circuit and supplies pass.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean channel F's connector.
- Repair an open, short, or damaged terminal in channel F's network wiring.
- Restore a faulty sensor or module power or ground connection.
- Replace the channel F sensor or module if testing confirms an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Do not rely on normal throttle response: channel F loss can cause reduced power or unpredictable acceleration. Avoid driving at speed or in traffic, and stop if the vehicle does not respond consistently.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
