OBD-II fault code

U065E: Lost Communication With Ram Air Actuator

What it means

The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart HVAC ram-air actuator (high-speed fresh-air bypass flap). Bypass control cannot be commanded; airflow at speed may differ from setpoint.

How it works

The ram air actuator controls a high-speed fresh-air bypass flap in the HVAC intake. U065E sets when a control module stops receiving its expected network messages, so the flap's position cannot be confirmed or adjusted as intended and airflow at speed may differ from the setting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the HVAC and other modules for freeze-frame data and related communication faults, checking whether the ram air actuator alone is offline.
  2. If supported, compare commanded and reported ram air flap position while changing the relevant HVAC setting or vehicle-speed conditions safely.
  3. Inspect the ram air actuator connector, harness, and flap area for loose connections, corrosion, chafing, or a flap obstructed by debris.
  4. Check the actuator's specified power and ground, since a supply problem can prevent it from communicating.
  5. Test the actuator's network wiring for opens, shorts, and poor connections to the manufacturer's specification before considering actuator replacement.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or secure the ram air actuator connector.
  • Remove an obstruction from the flap if the vehicle's service procedure allows access, and confirm it moves freely.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals in the actuator's network circuit.
  • Restore missing power or ground, or replace the ram air actuator or its module if testing confirms the fault.

Can I keep driving?

This fault generally affects HVAC intake airflow, especially at speed, rather than engine control. Driving is usually possible if visibility and cabin ventilation remain adequate; stop if airflow problems prevent safe defogging.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
