OBD-II fault code

U0636: Lost Communication With Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Coolant Control Valve A

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected network messages from hybrid/EV battery pack coolant control valve A. The effect on battery coolant routing depends on the vehicle's system design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Hybrid/EV battery pack coolant control valve A routes coolant through a battery thermal-management circuit and reports its status through a networked module. U0636 sets when expected messages from valve A stop arriving, so the receiving module cannot confirm its communication or reported state.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Warning light or message related to the affected system
  • Battery cooling may not operate as intended

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for battery cooling, valve, network, and power-supply codes.
  2. Check live data for valve A communication, commanded position, or reported status and compare with the vehicle's available valve data.
  3. Inspect valve A's low-voltage wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or coolant intrusion without disturbing high-voltage parts.
  4. Check power and ground at the module communicating valve A, following the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
  5. Test the network circuit and assess the valve's communicating module using the manufacturer's hybrid/EV procedure if wiring and supplies are sound.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose low-voltage wiring on valve A's communication path.
  • Clean or replace corroded valve A or module connector terminals and restore seals.
  • Repair a verified power or ground fault to the module reporting valve A.
  • Replace the communicating module only after network wiring and electrical supplies have been checked.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid fast charging and demanding driving if a battery cooling warning appears or the vehicle limits power. If valve A cannot be monitored, coolant routing may not be as intended; stop and follow the vehicle's guidance if a battery temperature warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
