OBD-II fault code

U0634: Lost Communication With Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Coolant Temperature Sensor A

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected network messages from hybrid/EV battery pack coolant temperature sensor A. The effect on battery thermal management depends on the vehicle's system design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Hybrid/EV battery pack coolant temperature sensor A reports temperature for a battery cooling circuit through a networked module. U0634 sets when expected messages from sensor A stop reaching the receiving module, leaving that specific battery coolant temperature input unavailable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Warning light or message related to the affected system
  • Battery temperature data may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for battery thermal-management, network, isolation, and power-supply codes.
  2. Check live data for battery pack coolant temperature sensor A and compare it with other battery temperature readings and sensor B if available.
  3. Inspect sensor A's harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or coolant intrusion without disturbing high-voltage components.
  4. Check power and ground at the module communicating sensor A using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
  5. Have the network circuit and communicating module evaluated using the manufacturer's hybrid/EV procedures if visual checks and supply checks do not identify the fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged low-voltage network wiring or connector terminals serving sensor A.
  • Clean or replace corroded sensor A or module connectors and restore seals.
  • Repair a verified power or ground fault at the module that reports sensor A.
  • Replace the communicating module only after the wiring and its power and ground are confirmed good.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid demanding acceleration, fast charging, or continued use if a battery temperature or hybrid/EV system warning appears. Missing sensor A data can impair battery thermal management; stop and follow the vehicle's warning guidance if power is limited or a temperature warning is shown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
