OBD-II fault code

U0613: Lost Communication With Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Bank 1

What it means

The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart IAT sensor 2 on bank 1 (typically post-intercooler). Charge-air density correction reverts to a substitute value.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The smart intake air temperature sensor 2 on bank 1 typically measures charge air after the intercooler and sends its reading over the vehicle bus. U0613 sets when the control module no longer receives messages from this post-intercooler sensor, so it may substitute a value for charge-air density correction.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for related communication codes, which can reveal whether the fault affects only bank 1 sensor 2 or a wider network.
  2. Compare live data for bank 1 IAT sensor 2 with the other intake-air readings, especially the upstream temperature, to check for a missing or implausible post-intercooler value.
  3. Inspect the bank 1 sensor 2 connector and wiring near the charge-air path for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, or moisture.
  4. Check power and ground at the bank 1 sensor 2 module using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. Test its communication wiring for opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure, then repair any circuit fault.
  6. If power, ground, and wiring pass, verify bus communication at the bank 1 sensor 2 module before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the bank 1 IAT sensor 2 connector.
  • Clean corrosion or repair damaged terminals at the bank 1 sensor 2 connector.
  • Repair damaged or shorted communication wiring for the bank 1 post-intercooler sensor.
  • Restore the sensor module's power or ground connection.
  • Replace the bank 1 IAT sensor 2 module if it fails communication testing with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally and no temperature warnings are present, limit driving to a short, gentle trip while arranging diagnosis; the missing post-intercooler reading can affect charge-air correction and emissions control. Stop if the engine overheats, loses power, or enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
