What it means
The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart IAT sensor 1 on bank 1. Charge-air density correction reverts to a substitute value.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The smart intake air temperature sensor 1 on bank 1 measures the temperature of the incoming or charge air and sends its reading over the vehicle communication bus. The control module sets U0611 when it can no longer receive messages from this specific sensor, so charge-air density correction may use a substitute value.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check whether other communication codes appeared at the same time, which can point to a shared bus or power problem.
- Compare live data for bank 1 IAT sensor 1 with ambient temperature and other available intake-air readings to confirm that this sensor's value is missing or implausible.
- Inspect the bank 1 sensor 1 connector and nearby bus wiring for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, chafing, or water entry.
- Check the sensor module's power and ground connections against the manufacturer's wiring information, since a loss there can silence a working sensor.
- Test the communication circuit for opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure, and repair any wiring fault found.
- If wiring, power, and ground are sound, verify the sensor's bus messages with suitable diagnostic equipment before replacing the bank 1 sensor 1 module.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the bank 1 IAT sensor 1 connector.
- Clean corrosion or repair damaged terminals at the bank 1 sensor 1 connector.
- Repair an open, short, or chafed section in the sensor's communication wiring.
- Restore the sensor module's power or ground connection.
- Replace the bank 1 IAT sensor 1 module if it fails testing after its circuit is verified.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally and there are no temperature warnings or other serious faults, a short, gentle trip may be possible, but arrange diagnosis soon because air-temperature correction and emissions control may be less accurate. Stop if the engine overheats, loses power, or enters limp mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
