OBD-II fault code

U0609: Lost Communication With Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Sensor

What it means

The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with smart MAP/BARO sensor. Without these inputs, ECM load and altitude correction switch to fallback values.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

A smart manifold absolute pressure/barometric pressure sensor reports intake manifold pressure and atmospheric pressure data over the vehicle network. U0609 sets when the engine control module stops receiving those messages, leaving it to estimate engine load and altitude correction from fallback values.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan all modules for communication codes to identify when MAP/BARO data disappeared and whether other network faults coincide.
  2. Check live MAP and barometric pressure data for missing, frozen, or implausible readings compared with engine conditions.
  3. Inspect the MAP/BARO sensor connector and bus wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or shorts.
  4. Verify the sensor or module power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the relevant network wiring for opens or shorts, then evaluate the sensor module if the network and its power and ground are intact.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the MAP/BARO sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged or shorted network wiring to the sensor.
  • Restore a faulty sensor power or ground connection.
  • Replace the MAP/BARO sensor module if its network connection and supplies are verified but communication remains absent.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but fallback pressure estimates can affect fueling and emissions. Avoid heavy loads if it runs poorly, and address the fault promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
