OBD-II fault code

U05BD: Invalid Data Received From Localization and Mapping Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the localization and mapping module (HD map / SLAM ECU). Position or map-attribute values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The localization and mapping module combines vehicle position information with high-definition map data and shares its position and map attributes with other systems. This code sets when a receiving module finds those values implausible and rejects them, which can affect functions that depend on accurate location or map context.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify which module rejected localization and mapping data and whether related position or ADAS faults are present.
  2. Check which location-dependent functions are unavailable and note whether the fault appears in a particular area or after a recent map or module change.
  3. Check the module's scan-tool status for position or map-data validity and compare it with the vehicle's reported location and operating conditions.
  4. Inspect the localization and mapping module's connectors and accessible wiring for looseness, damage, or corrosion.
  5. Check for related CAN or gateway faults that could disrupt position or map messages between modules.
  6. If the module or map software was recently updated or replaced, verify the software version and vehicle configuration.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose, damaged, or corroded module wiring and connectors.
  • Correct gateway routing or network configuration if position or map messages are being misrouted.
  • Update or configure the module or map data to the vehicle's required version.
  • Replace the localization and mapping module if its position or map output remains implausible and an internal fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but location-dependent driver assistance or navigation functions may be limited. Do not rely on map-based prompts or assistance to judge road conditions, lane position, or turns.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
