OBD-II fault code

U05AB: Invalid Data Received From Engine Disconnect Clutch

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the hybrid engine disconnect clutch actuator. Position or pressure values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

In a hybrid vehicle, the engine disconnect clutch actuator separates or reconnects the engine from the hybrid drivetrain and reports position or pressure information to other modules. This code sets when a receiving module rejects those reported values as implausible, so the drivetrain may not reliably coordinate engine engagement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan the hybrid, transmission, engine, and network modules for clutch and communication codes before clearing anything.
  2. Review live engine disconnect clutch position and pressure data and note whether it disagrees with commanded state or vehicle operation.
  3. Inspect the actuator connector, harness, power, ground, and CAN wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or poor grounds, following the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure.
  4. Check for related hydraulic pressure, actuator, or position-sensing faults that could cause inconsistent clutch reports.
  5. Verify software and configuration compatibility among the clutch actuator, hybrid control modules, and gateway, especially after replacement.
  6. If the wiring and related systems check out, use manufacturer-approved hybrid drivetrain tests to isolate the actuator, receiving module, or gateway.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged actuator wiring, connectors, grounds, or CAN connections using the prescribed hybrid safety procedure.
  • Correct a confirmed hydraulic, position-sensing, or actuator supply fault affecting clutch data.
  • Update or configure replacement clutch or hybrid control modules to compatible software.
  • Replace the confirmed faulty clutch actuator, receiving module, or gateway.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if hybrid warnings, unexpected engine engagement, loss of propulsion, or limp mode occur; clutch coordination faults can leave the vehicle unable to deliver power predictably. If it behaves normally, limit use and arrange prompt diagnosis by a technician equipped for hybrid systems.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
