OBD-II fault code

U05AA: Invalid Data Received From Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the charge air cooler (intercooler) coolant pump. Pump speed or flow values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The charge air cooler coolant pump circulates coolant through the intercooler circuit to reduce intake-air temperature. This code sets when a receiving module rejects the pump's reported speed or flow data as implausible, so charge-air cooling may be restricted or uncertain.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for charge-air cooling, pump, temperature, and communication codes before clearing faults.
  2. Review live pump speed or flow and charge-air or coolant temperatures to see whether pump data is missing or inconsistent with operating conditions.
  3. Inspect the pump connector, power and ground wiring, CAN connections, coolant hoses, and reservoir for damage, leaks, or poor connections.
  4. Check for related charge-air temperature sensor or coolant circuit faults that could explain an implausible pump report.
  5. Verify compatible software and configuration for the pump controller, receiving module, and gateway, particularly after replacement.
  6. If the circuit and coolant path appear sound, use manufacturer-approved tests to distinguish a pump/controller fault from a receiving-module or gateway fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged pump wiring, connectors, grounds, or CAN connections.
  • Restore coolant level and repair leaks or restrictions in the charge-air cooler coolant circuit.
  • Correct related temperature-sensor faults or module software and configuration mismatches.
  • Replace the confirmed faulty coolant pump/controller, gateway, or receiving module.

Can I keep driving?

Drive gently only if temperatures remain normal and there are no powertrain warnings; reduced intercooler cooling can raise intake temperatures and reduce power. Stop if the vehicle overheats, loses power, or enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
