What it means
The infotainment system receives invalid map or display data from the navigation module. Map view freezes or shows blank tiles.
How it works
The Navigation Display Module supplies map and display information to the infotainment system. U0586 is set when the receiving system rejects that navigation data, which may leave the map frozen or blank; it does not necessarily mean the display itself has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Map data corrupted
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the infotainment, navigation, and gateway modules for freeze-frame and communication faults, and note whether the map failure began after a software or map update.
- Check live data or module status for navigation data reception and compare it with the blank or frozen map display.
- Inspect navigation module and gateway connectors and network wiring for loose connections, corrosion, or damage.
- Check the CAN network and its termination only using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification; do not assume a nominal resistance value applies to every network.
- If the network checks pass, verify map data integrity and module software, then test gateway routing and the navigation display module per the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Restore or reinstall map data if diagnostics confirm that the stored map data is corrupted.
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged navigation module or gateway connector.
- Repair network wiring or termination only where testing identifies a fault.
- Apply the correct infotainment or navigation software update and configuration.
- Repair or replace the gateway or Navigation Display Module only if testing isolates that component.
Can I keep driving?
This fault usually affects navigation display rather than vehicle control, so driving may be possible. Do not interact with a frozen screen while moving; use another navigation method until it is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
