What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the steering column lock (ELV) module. Lock/unlock state values fail plausibility checks and are rejected; the engine may refuse to start.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The column lock module reports whether the steering column is locked or unlocked, information the vehicle may use to authorize starting. A receiving module sets U0537 when that lock-state data fails plausibility checks and is rejected, so the engine may not be allowed to start.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data, especially start authorization, immobilizer, and communication faults alongside U0537.
- Check whether the steering column is actually locked and whether the key or start button behavior changes when the steering wheel is gently unloaded.
- Inspect the column lock module's connector and accessible wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or signs of tampering.
- Use a scan tool to compare the reported lock state with the physical lock state and check for messages rejected by the receiving module.
- Check battery condition and related supply or ground faults, since low system voltage can disrupt module status messages.
- If wiring and power are sound, verify module compatibility and configuration after replacement, then diagnose the column lock and gateway with manufacturer procedures.
Common fixes
- Repair a damaged or poorly connected column lock module wiring or connector.
- Resolve a weak battery or poor power or ground connection if it is disrupting module communication.
- Correct module compatibility or configuration after a replacement.
- Repair gateway routing if the lock-state message is being delivered incorrectly.
- Replace the column lock module if its state remains invalid after power, wiring, and configuration are verified.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may fail to start or may not confirm that the steering column is unlocked; do not force the wheel or attempt to drive if steering operation is restricted. If the vehicle starts and steers normally, have the fault addressed promptly because it can recur and prevent restarting.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
