What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the lateral acceleration sensor module. Lateral g values fail plausibility checks against steering and yaw rate and are rejected; ESC may be inhibited.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The lateral acceleration sensor module measures side-to-side acceleration used by stability control and related systems. A receiving module sets U0536 when the reported lateral-g value is implausible compared with steering and yaw-rate information and rejects it; stability control may be inhibited.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data, noting which receiver logged U0536 and any ABS, steering, or yaw-rate codes.
- Check the dash for stability-control or brake-system warnings and note whether the engine warning light is also on.
- Inspect the lateral acceleration sensor module's mounting, connector, and wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or signs of water entry.
- With the vehicle stationary on level ground, compare the sensor's live lateral-acceleration reading with the scan-tool and manufacturer guidance for a stationary vehicle.
- If supported, compare lateral acceleration with steering angle and yaw-rate data during a controlled check, and look for values that disagree or drop out.
- If the readings remain implausible, verify module configuration and calibration requirements, then check gateway routing and module operation using manufacturer procedures.
Common fixes
- Secure the lateral acceleration sensor module and repair any damaged or corroded wiring or connector.
- Correct module configuration or carry out the specified calibration after relevant repairs.
- Repair a gateway fault that is misrouting the lateral acceleration data.
- Replace the lateral acceleration sensor module if its output remains implausible after mounting, wiring, and calibration are verified.
Can I keep driving?
Drive cautiously only if the vehicle brakes and steers normally, and avoid high speeds, slippery roads, and abrupt maneuvers because stability control may be unavailable. If the brake warning is on, handling is abnormal, or the vehicle enters reduced-power mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
