What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the automatic lighting (ambient light/rain sensor) control module. Lux or wiper-trigger values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
How it works
The automatic lighting control module uses ambient-light and, where fitted, rain-sensor inputs to report conditions used by automatic headlamps or wipers. A receiving module sets U0481 when the module's light-level or wiper-trigger data is implausible and is rejected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the body and lighting modules for U0481 and related communication or sensor codes, and record freeze-frame data before clearing them.
- Check live ambient-light and rain-sensor readings while changing the lighting and wiper conditions in a controlled, safe setting to see whether the reported values respond plausibly.
- Inspect the sensor area, windshield mounting, connector, and harness for obstruction, damage, moisture, or a loose connection.
- Check the module's power, ground, and network wiring against the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the sensor or module was recently replaced or the windshield serviced, check manufacturer service information for required configuration or calibration, then retest the reported data.
Common fixes
- Clear an obstruction from the sensor area and secure the sensor at its specified mounting position.
- Repair a damaged or loose connector or harness at the automatic lighting sensor or module.
- Restore a faulty power, ground, or network connection.
- Perform the specified configuration or calibration after relevant replacement or windshield work.
- Replace the sensor or module if its data remains implausible after circuit and setup checks pass.
Can I keep driving?
Automatic headlamps or rain-sensing wipers may not respond correctly, so use the manual lighting and wiper controls and adjust them to visibility and weather conditions. This code alone does not establish an engine or braking problem.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
