OBD-II fault code

U046B: Invalid Data Received From Global Positioning System Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the GPS receiver module. Position, time or satellite-quality values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The GPS receiver module supplies position, time, and satellite-quality information to vehicle systems such as navigation. A receiving module sets U046B when GPS data fails plausibility checks and is rejected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and communication codes to identify which module rejected the GPS message.
  2. Compare live GPS position, time, and satellite-quality data with the vehicle's actual location and whether it has a clear view of the sky.
  3. Inspect the GPS antenna, its cable, and module connectors for looseness, damage, or water intrusion.
  4. Check for related CAN or gateway faults and note whether navigation or other systems also report loss of GPS data.
  5. If the antenna, wiring, and network are sound, verify receiver operation and software compatibility using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or damaged GPS antenna cable.
  • Repair corroded or damaged GPS module connector terminals.
  • Correct module software or configuration after replacement.
  • Replace a faulty GPS antenna or receiver module if testing confirms the fault.
  • Repair a gateway or CAN network issue affecting GPS messages.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally safe if the vehicle otherwise operates normally, but navigation and any location-dependent features may be unreliable. Use road signs and other reliable directions rather than relying on a position that may be incorrect.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
