OBD-II fault code

U0469: Invalid Data Received From Starter / Generator Control Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the integrated starter-generator (ISG/BSG) control module. Torque, speed or current values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The starter/generator control module manages the integrated starter-generator, which can crank the engine and provide electrical assistance or charging. A receiving module sets U0469 when reported starter/generator torque, speed, or current data fails plausibility checks and is rejected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame and charging or hybrid-system codes to find which module rejected the starter/generator data.
  2. Compare live starter/generator speed, torque, and current data with engine starting, acceleration, and charging behavior.
  3. Inspect accessible control-module connectors and low-voltage wiring for loose pins, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
  4. Check for related CAN, gateway, battery, or charging-system faults that could distort or interrupt starter/generator messages.
  5. If wiring and network checks pass, verify sensor inputs and module software compatibility using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly connected starter/generator control wiring.
  • Correct a poor low-voltage power or ground connection.
  • Resolve a related battery or charging-system fault identified by testing.
  • Update or configure a replacement starter/generator control module.
  • Repair or replace the module or its sensor input if the reported values remain implausible.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if the vehicle has a charging, starting, or reduced-power warning, since the engine may not restart or electrical assistance may be lost. Stop safely if propulsion becomes unreliable or the vehicle enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
