OBD-II fault code

U0459: Invalid Data Received From Head Up Display

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the head-up display (HUD). Projected speed, navigation arrows or warnings cannot be drawn correctly and may be hidden until the data clears.

How it works

The head-up display receives vehicle information such as speed, navigation guidance, and warnings so it can project them into the driver's view. U0459 is set when a receiving module rejects data from the HUD as implausible; the projection may be missing or misleading even if the instrument cluster remains usable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the HUD, instrument cluster, and other reporting modules for U0459 and related communication codes, preserving freeze-frame details.
  2. Check whether the projected speed, navigation prompts, or warnings are absent or inconsistent with the cluster and navigation display.
  3. Inspect the HUD lens area and accessible connectors for obstruction, damage, or signs of recent dashboard work.
  4. Use a capable scan tool to compare HUD status and incoming display data with the values shown by the source modules.
  5. If the HUD or a communicating module was replaced or updated, verify software and configuration compatibility.
  6. Follow manufacturer procedures to test the HUD module and network path if data remains invalid after configuration and wiring checks.

Common fixes

  • Clear an obstruction or correct a display setup issue if the projection itself is merely obscured.
  • Repair a loose or damaged HUD connector or network wire.
  • Correct HUD software or configuration after replacement or programming.
  • Repair or replace the HUD module if testing confirms it reports or handles data incorrectly.

Can I keep driving?

The HUD fault alone usually does not prevent driving if the instrument cluster clearly shows speed and warnings. Do not rely on the projection for speed or navigation until its information is confirmed accurate.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
