OBD-II fault code

U0449: Invalid Data Received From Gateway C

What it means

A receiving module detected invalid data from Gateway C. The code does not by itself identify the source of the invalid data or establish that a gateway fault is present.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

A receiving module checks messages from Gateway C, which routes data between vehicle networks or modules. U0449 sets when a Gateway C message fails that module’s plausibility checks and is rejected; the code does not establish that Gateway C itself is defective.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and capture freeze-frame data and related network codes to identify the reporting module and any faults associated with Gateway C.
  2. Determine which functions or warnings are affected and compare the vehicle’s actual state with the corresponding scan-tool data.
  3. Inspect Gateway C connectors, grounds, and network wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, damage, or recent disturbance.
  4. Compare relevant live data from Gateway C and the receiving module to locate an implausible or inconsistent message.
  5. If any involved module was replaced or programmed, verify software compatibility and configuration for Gateway C and the receiving module.
  6. Test power, grounds, and network circuits against wiring information and manufacturer’s specifications before deciding whether a module has failed.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged Gateway C connector or network wire.
  • Correct a faulty connection or input that makes the source data implausible.
  • Resolve software or configuration mismatches after module replacement or programming.
  • Repair a confirmed network routing or wiring fault.
  • Replace Gateway C only after circuit, configuration, and software checks isolate an internal gateway fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle operates normally and no safety-related features are affected, drive cautiously and arrange diagnosis soon. Avoid driving if the fault causes reduced vehicle control or disables essential safety functions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
