OBD-II fault code

U0447: Invalid Data Received From Gateway A

What it means

A receiving module detected invalid data from Gateway A. The code does not by itself identify the source of the invalid data or establish that a gateway fault is present.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

A receiving module checks messages from Gateway A, which passes data between vehicle networks or modules. U0447 sets when the receiving module judges a Gateway A message invalid and rejects it; this code does not by itself identify whether the issue is the source data, gateway, or network.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Gateway software corrupted
  2. Gateway internally failing
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan every accessible module and record freeze-frame data and network codes to find which module logged U0447 and whether other gateway-related faults are present.
  2. Note which functions or warning lights are affected, then compare the affected module’s reported data with the vehicle’s actual state.
  3. Inspect Gateway A’s connectors, power and ground connections, and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare the relevant live data at Gateway A and the receiving module, looking for a mismatch or missing message.
  5. If Gateway A or a related module was recently replaced or updated, check software compatibility, configuration, and applicable updates.
  6. Test the gateway’s power, grounds, and network circuits according to the wiring information and manufacturer’s specifications before considering replacement.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged Gateway A connector or network wire.
  • Restore a faulty gateway power or ground connection.
  • Correct incompatible module software or configuration after replacement or programming.
  • Repair a network routing or wiring fault confirmed by circuit testing.
  • Replace or reprogram Gateway A only when testing confirms the fault is internal to the gateway.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives and steers normally and no safety-related functions are affected, a cautious trip to a repair location may be reasonable. Stop driving if warnings or lost functions affect braking, steering, visibility, or other essential control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
