What it means
The Steering Wheel Angle Sensor is present on the data bus but the values it reports are implausible — out of range, frozen, or failing the checksum or rolling-count check. The receiving modules reject the data. Stability control loses a trustworthy steering-angle value. Causes include a faulty sensor feeding the module, internal computation errors, a software or calibration mismatch after a repair, or bus interference corrupting the frames.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The steering column control module sends steering-related data over the vehicle network, including information used by stability control to interpret steering input. U0429 is set when a receiving module judges that data implausible, which can result from an uncalibrated or failed steering angle sensor or incorrect gateway routing.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Steering angle sensor not calibrated
- Steering angle sensor failed
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and check freeze-frame data to identify the receiving module that stored U0429 and any related steering or CAN faults.
- View steering angle data while turning the wheel slowly through center and both directions; check for frozen, erratic, or implausible values.
- Inspect the steering column control module, steering angle sensor, and gateway connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, looseness, or recent repair disturbance.
- Check whether steering angle calibration is needed after an alignment, battery disconnect, or steering-column repair.
- Test network communication and verify the steering column module's data and calibration using the manufacturer's procedures before deciding whether a module has failed.
Common fixes
- Calibrate the steering angle sensor if the vehicle's procedure calls for it.
- Repair loose, damaged, or corroded wiring or connectors at the steering column module or gateway.
- Correct gateway message routing if network tests identify that fault.
- Replace the steering angle sensor or steering column control module only if testing confirms the faulty unit.
Can I keep driving?
Use caution because stability control may not receive trustworthy steering information, especially on wet or slippery roads. If steering behavior changes or stability or steering warnings remain on, avoid driving and have the fault diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
