OBD-II fault code

U0428: Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module

What it means

A receiving module has received invalid data from the steering angle sensor module. The data cannot be trusted for systems that use steering angle information.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The steering angle sensor module reports steering-wheel position over the vehicle network so systems such as stability control can compare the driver's steering input with vehicle motion. U0428 is set when a receiving module rejects that position data as implausible; sensor drift, lost EPS calibration, or gateway message-routing trouble can cause it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Steering torque sensor drift
  2. EPS calibration lost (after battery disconnect or alignment)
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data to see which controller logged U0428 and whether stability-control or steering codes are also present.
  2. Check the steering-angle live data while turning the wheel slowly from center in both directions; look for a reading that jumps, sticks, or does not follow wheel movement.
  3. Inspect the steering angle sensor, EPS, and gateway connectors and wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or recent disturbance.
  4. If the battery was disconnected or an alignment or steering repair was performed, check whether the steering angle or EPS calibration procedure is required for this vehicle.
  5. Check gateway and CAN communication faults, then verify the sensor signal and calibration against the manufacturer's procedure before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Restore the steering angle or EPS calibration using the vehicle's specified procedure.
  • Repair damaged or poorly connected sensor, EPS, or gateway wiring.
  • Correct a gateway or CAN routing fault if testing identifies one.
  • Replace the steering angle sensor module if its readings remain implausible after wiring and calibration checks.

Can I keep driving?

Drive cautiously only if steering feels normal and no stability or steering warnings indicate reduced assistance; avoid high speeds and slippery roads because stability control may not have reliable steering-angle data. If steering assistance changes or multiple safety warnings appear, stop safely and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
