OBD-II fault code

U0302: Software Incompatibility with TCM

What it means

A control module has detected that its software/calibration is incompatible with the transmission control module. Often appears after a TCM swap or partial flash.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The transmission control module (TCM) manages transmission shifts and exchanges data with other controllers. U0302 sets when a module detects that the TCM's software or calibration is incompatible with the version it expects. A TCM swap, incomplete flash, or incorrect coding can cause the mismatch; gateway routing can also affect the messages being checked.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Software/calibration mismatch with TCM
  2. Used TCM from different vehicle fitted
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for U0302 and transmission communication or programming faults, and save freeze-frame data before clearing codes.
  2. Check repair history for a TCM replacement, software update, or coding change that occurred before the fault appeared.
  3. Use a capable scan tool to compare the TCM's software and calibration identifiers with the vehicle's required configuration.
  4. Check TCM coding and gateway network configuration for a mismatch that could prevent compatible data from being recognized.
  5. If the TCM software or coding is incorrect, have it programmed to the compatible vehicle-specific version using the manufacturer's procedure, then rescan.

Common fixes

  • Complete or repeat an interrupted TCM update with the correct calibration.
  • Correct TCM or gateway coding that does not match the vehicle configuration.
  • Program a replacement TCM to the vehicle and compatible modules.
  • Replace the TCM only if it cannot be programmed correctly or still reports incompatibility afterward.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting is normal and no transmission warning is present, keep trips short and gentle until the fault is corrected. Avoid towing, steep climbs, and hard acceleration; stop driving if shifts become harsh, gears are unavailable, or the transmission enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
