What it means
A control module has detected that its software/calibration is incompatible with the engine ECM/PCM. Typically appears after a partial flash, mismatched coding, or fitting a used ECM from a different vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The engine ECM/PCM controls engine operation and exchanges data with other vehicle modules. U0301 sets when a module identifies software or calibration that is incompatible with the ECM/PCM's expected version or configuration. A partial flash, mismatched coding, or an incorrectly matched ECM can trigger it; a gateway routing issue may also prevent the expected messages from reaching a module.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Software/calibration mismatch with ECM
- Used ECM from different vehicle fitted
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and note which one reports U0301, plus any ECM/PCM communication or programming codes, before clearing faults.
- Review freeze-frame data and recent repair history for an ECM/PCM replacement, software update, or coding change.
- Compare the ECM/PCM and reporting module's software and calibration identifiers with the vehicle's required configuration using a capable scan tool.
- Check the ECM/PCM coding and the gateway's network routing data for configuration errors that could affect the expected messages.
- If identifiers or coding do not match, program the ECM/PCM and affected module to compatible versions using the manufacturer's procedure, then rescan.
Common fixes
- Complete or repeat an interrupted ECM/PCM software update with the correct calibration.
- Correct ECM/PCM or gateway coding that does not match the vehicle configuration.
- Program a replacement ECM/PCM for the vehicle and compatible modules.
- Replace a module only if it cannot be programmed correctly or continues to report incompatibility after programming.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally and no warning or drivability problem is present, limit driving to what is necessary until the compatibility fault is resolved. Avoid driving if the engine enters limp mode, stalls, or responds unpredictably, because engine control or emissions functions may be affected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
