OBD-II fault code

U02BD: Lost Communication With Night Vision Control Module

What it means

The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with the night vision module. The infrared camera image and pedestrian highlighting in the head-up or cluster display are unavailable.

How it works

The night vision control module processes infrared camera information and supplies the image or pedestrian highlighting shown on the display. The vehicle network monitors messages from this module and sets this code when they stop arriving or cannot be understood. Night vision imagery and related alerts may be unavailable until communication returns.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save event data to identify when the night vision module stopped responding and whether display or network faults occurred at the same time.
  2. Check the cluster or head-up display and live scan data to confirm whether the night vision image is absent and whether the module reports offline.
  3. Inspect the module and infrared camera connectors, accessible harness and mounting area for looseness, corrosion, water entry or impact damage.
  4. Check the module's specified power and ground at the connector using the manufacturer's service information.
  5. Test the communication wiring to the night vision module for opens, shorts and poor connections using the manufacturer's network procedure.
  6. If its supply and network pass, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to test the module and confirm that the image and alerts return.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded night vision module or camera connector.
  • Repair damaged communication wiring or restore the module's specified power or ground.
  • Correct an obstructed, damaged or displaced camera connection if inspection identifies one.
  • Replace or reprogram the night vision control module only if testing confirms it has failed.

Can I keep driving?

You can drive, but treat the night vision image and pedestrian highlighting as unavailable and do not rely on them to detect hazards. Use normal headlights and direct observation, especially in poor visibility.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
