What it means
The vehicle bus reports loss of communication with the EVAP purge pump (used on systems with electric purging instead of intake-vacuum). Vapour purge from the carbon canister cannot be commanded.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP purge pump moves fuel vapour from the carbon canister into the engine intake on systems that use an electric pump for purging. The vehicle network monitors messages from the pump and sets this code when communication is lost. Purge flow can no longer be commanded, which may trigger an emissions warning and affect EVAP operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the engine and body or network modules, saving freeze-frame data and any EVAP or communication codes that occurred with the loss of purge-pump communication.
- Use live data or an actuator test, if supported, to see whether the purge pump is recognized and whether the command changes its reported status.
- Inspect the purge pump connector, nearby harness and EVAP hoses for loose connections, corrosion, damage or disconnection.
- Check the pump's specified power and ground at its connector according to the manufacturer's service information.
- Test the bus wiring to the purge pump for opens, shorts or poor connections using the manufacturer's network test procedure.
- If wiring and supply checks pass, test the purge pump and verify EVAP operation with the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded purge-pump connector.
- Repair damaged bus wiring or restore the pump's specified power or ground.
- Reconnect a displaced EVAP hose found during inspection.
- Replace the EVAP purge pump if testing confirms it has failed, then clear codes and verify the EVAP system.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle is generally driveable if it runs normally, but the check-engine light may remain on and an emissions inspection may be affected. Have the EVAP fault repaired soon, and stop driving if a fuel smell or other sign of a fuel leak appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
