What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the front display interface module. The code identifies the communication loss; display functions routed through that module may be affected.
How it works
The front display interface module sends information over the vehicle network so other modules can support the front display. This code sets when a monitoring module does not receive the expected messages from that display interface module.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Front display functions may be unavailable or limited
- A warning may appear depending on the vehicle
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and identify which modules report U0255, then check whether other network communication codes point to a shared fault.
- Check whether the front display works and note which display functions are missing, since the failure pattern can help narrow the affected module or network path.
- Inspect the display interface module connectors and nearby bus wiring for loose connections, corrosion, damage, or signs of a short or open circuit.
- Check the module's power and ground connections under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, because a supply fault can silence an otherwise working module.
- If power and ground are sound, test the network wiring to the front display interface module for opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or secure a loose front display interface module connector.
- Repair damaged or corroded network wiring or connector terminals.
- Restore a missing power or ground connection to the display interface module.
- Replace the front display interface module if its wiring and supplies are good and it still does not communicate.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle drives normally and only front display functions are affected, driving may be possible, but avoid relying on unavailable display information. Stop safely if the loss of display functions obscures information needed to operate the vehicle.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
