OBD-II fault code

U0254: Lost Communication With Remote Start Module

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the remote start module. The code identifies the communication loss; remote-start functions may be affected if equipped.

How it works

The remote start module communicates with other vehicle modules to support remote starting when the vehicle is equipped with that feature. U0254 sets when another module no longer receives the expected messages from the remote start module, so remote start may be unavailable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Remote start may be unavailable if equipped
  • A warning may appear depending on the vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame and communication details to identify the reporting module and any related network faults.
  2. If equipped, check whether remote start is unavailable and note any dashboard or remote-start system warnings.
  3. Inspect the remote start module connector and nearby bus wiring for loose connections, corrosion, or harness damage.
  4. Check the module's power and ground according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test the network wiring to the remote start module for opens or shorts using vehicle-specific wiring information.
  6. If the supplies and network wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's communication checks before considering module failure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose remote start module connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded bus wiring and connector terminals.
  • Restore a faulty module power feed or ground.
  • Replace the remote start module only after its power, ground, and network circuits test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

The likely effect is loss of remote-start operation if equipped; ordinary starting and driving may be unaffected. Do not rely on remote start, and use the normal start procedure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
