What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the heated steering wheel module. The code identifies the communication loss; it does not establish the cause or which functions are affected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The heated steering wheel module controls the wheel heater and communicates its status to other vehicle modules. U0229 is set when a receiving module no longer gets the expected messages from that module; the code does not by itself prove the heater element has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loss of power or ground to the module
- Open, shorted, or damaged network wiring or connector
- Failed module
Symptoms
- Heated steering wheel operation may be unavailable
- A communication fault may be stored; a warning may appear depending on the vehicle
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for communication codes and freeze-frame details, noting whether other cabin modules lost communication at the same time.
- Check whether the steering-wheel heat control responds and whether any related steering-wheel functions are also affected.
- Inspect accessible connectors and wiring to the heated steering wheel module for looseness, corrosion, or damage, following the vehicle's safety procedures around steering-wheel components.
- Check the module's power and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the module's network wiring and connectors for opens, shorts, or poor contact using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- If power, ground, and network circuits are intact, verify module communication with a capable scan tool before condemning the module.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded module connector.
- Repair damaged network wiring to the heated steering wheel module.
- Restore a failed power or ground connection.
- Replace the heated steering wheel module if its supplies and network circuit test correctly but it remains offline.
Can I keep driving?
The code generally affects steering-wheel heating rather than basic steering, so normal driving may be possible if steering functions operate normally. Do not handle steering-wheel wiring or remove trim without the required safety procedure, because the airbag is in the same area.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
