OBD-II fault code

U0213: Lost Communication with Mirror Control Module

What it means

Communication with the Mirror Control Module was not received as expected. The code does not specify which mirror functions are affected.

How it works

The Mirror Control Module manages mirror functions assigned to it and communicates with other modules over the vehicle network. This code is set when expected messages from the module are missing; it does not identify which mirror functions have stopped working.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. LIN wire to mirror open
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan all modules for communication faults to determine whether only the Mirror Control Module is offline.
  2. Check battery condition and the module's fuse and ground connections.
  3. Inspect the mirror module connectors and the LIN wire to the mirror for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or a broken connection.
  4. Use a capable scan tool to check module response and gateway communication, and verify which mirror functions are inoperative.
  5. If other modules have communication faults, test the relevant CAN network and termination against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded module power, ground, or connector connection.
  • Repair an open or damaged LIN wire to the mirror.
  • Replace a blown fuse after correcting its cause.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway routing or CAN network fault.
  • Replace the Mirror Control Module if its power, ground, LIN connection, and network path test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is generally drivable if visibility is adequate, but mirror adjustment or other mirror functions may not work. Set the mirrors before moving and do not drive if you cannot maintain a clear view around the vehicle.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
