OBD-II fault code

U0195: Lost Communication With Subscription Entertainment Receiver Module

What it means

A control module is not receiving expected messages from the Subscription Entertainment Receiver Module. Subscription entertainment functions may be unavailable; the code alone does not identify why communication was lost.

How it works

The Subscription Entertainment Receiver Module provides subscription-based entertainment services and exchanges status messages with other vehicle modules. U0195 is set when the reporting module stops receiving the receiver's expected network messages for the specified timeout.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Satellite radio module unpowered
  2. CAN wiring to satellite radio broken
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Subscription entertainment functions may be unavailable
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame information and related communication codes to tell whether the receiver alone is offline or there is a broader network problem.
  2. Check battery condition and system voltage, then verify that the subscription receiver powers up.
  3. Inspect the receiver's power, ground, and CAN connections for loose fittings, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
  4. Check the receiver's CAN wiring branch for an open or short using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. If power and wiring are sound, check gateway communication status and message routing for the receiver before testing or replacing modules.

Common fixes

  • Restore receiver power or correct a poor ground connection.
  • Reseat or clean the receiver's network connector.
  • Repair damaged CAN wiring between the receiver and network.
  • Correct a gateway routing fault confirmed by scan data.
  • Replace or reprogram the subscription entertainment receiver if it fails network and power checks.

Can I keep driving?

Subscription entertainment functions may be unavailable, while normal driving is generally unaffected by this code alone. Pay attention to any additional warnings or communication codes that identify other impaired systems.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
