OBD-II fault code

U0190: Lost Communication With Digital Disc Player/Changer Module D

What it means

The reporting module has lost communication with digital disc player/changer module D. It sets this code when expected messages from that module are not received for a specified time.

How it works

Module D is the vehicle's digital disc player or changer, which sends status and control messages over the vehicle network. The reporting module sets U0190 when those expected messages stop arriving for long enough to exceed its timeout.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module power or ground fault
  2. Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
  3. CAN bus short or open circuit
  4. Disc player/changer module failure
  5. Low battery voltage

Symptoms

  • Disc playback unavailable
  • Audio system warning or error message
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data and related communication codes to see whether the fault began with low system voltage or affects other network devices.
  2. Check battery condition and charging voltage, since low voltage can interrupt the disc changer's network communication.
  3. Inspect the changer's power and ground connections and its network connector for looseness, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
  4. Check the network wiring between the changer and the vehicle network for opens or shorts, following the vehicle wiring diagram.
  5. If power, ground, and wiring are sound, test network communication at the changer and verify the network against the manufacturer's specification before condemning module D.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or corroded disc changer connector.
  • Repair damaged power, ground, or network wiring to module D.
  • Correct a weak battery or charging-system fault.
  • Repair a CAN bus fault found on the changer's network branch.
  • Replace or reprogram the digital disc changer if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

This code alone does not affect engine operation or emissions, so driving is generally unaffected if no other vehicle functions are impaired. Disc playback may remain unavailable; address any accompanying warnings involving safety or vehicle controls promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
