What it means
The reporting module has lost communication with digital disc player/changer module B. It sets this code when expected messages from that module are not received for a specified time.
How it works
Digital disc player/changer module B provides disc playback functions for its assigned audio system and exchanges status messages over the vehicle network. U0188 is stored when the reporting module misses the expected messages from module B for the specified time. This code points to module B's communication path; a fault at another player module does not by itself explain it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module power or ground fault
- Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
- CAN bus short or open circuit
- Disc player/changer module failure
- Low battery voltage
Symptoms
- Rear audio or disc playback unavailable
- Audio system warning or error message
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data and communication codes to determine whether module B is the only player missing from the network.
- Check whether the audio system reports an error for module B and whether its assigned disc playback function is unavailable.
- Inspect module B's connectors, power and ground wiring, and CAN harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage.
- Check module B's power and ground under the manufacturer's specified conditions, especially if the fault appeared after a low-voltage event.
- Test the CAN bus connection at module B for opens, shorts, or communication faults using the wiring diagram and manufacturer specifications.
- If module B's circuits and network are sound, evaluate the module and gateway routing with vehicle-specific diagnostics.
Common fixes
- Charge the battery or repair a charging issue if low voltage is confirmed.
- Clean and secure module B's connector and repair any damaged terminals.
- Repair faulty power, ground, or CAN wiring serving disc player/changer module B.
- Correct a confirmed CAN bus or gateway routing fault.
- Replace or configure module B only after its power, ground, and network path pass testing.
Can I keep driving?
Driving is generally unaffected, but rear audio or the disc playback function assigned to module B may be unavailable. If other communication codes accompany U0188, check whether a broader network or low-voltage fault is affecting more than the audio system.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
