OBD-II fault code

U0162: Lost Communication with Navigation Display Module

What it means

A control module is not receiving expected messages from the Navigation Display Module. Navigation display functions may be unavailable; the code alone does not identify why communication was lost.

How it works

The navigation display module presents navigation information to the driver and may exchange status or control messages over the vehicle network. U0162 is set when a control module does not receive expected messages from that display module in time, so the code alone cannot distinguish a failed display from lost power, CAN wiring trouble, or gateway routing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Navigation display unpowered
  2. CAN wiring to navigation display broken
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Navigation display functions may be unavailable
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and review freeze-frame or event data for other communication codes that appeared with U0162.
  2. Check whether the navigation display powers up and whether its navigation-specific functions are missing.
  3. Inspect the display module's connectors, power and ground wiring, and CAN wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or water entry.
  4. Measure display-module power and ground under load against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test CAN communication at the display module and verify gateway routing with the vehicle's wiring information and scan-tool procedures.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded navigation-display connector.
  • Repair damaged power, ground, or CAN wiring at the display.
  • Restore the display module's failed power or ground supply.
  • Correct gateway routing or configuration if network checks identify it.
  • Replace the navigation display module only after its power and network circuits pass testing.

Can I keep driving?

If only the navigation display is affected, basic driving is generally possible, but do not rely on its directions or vehicle information until it works. Multiple communication faults or other failing functions warrant prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
