What it means
A control module is not receiving expected messages from the Audible Alert Control Module. Chimes or warning sounds may be unavailable; the code alone does not identify why communication was lost.
How it works
The Audible Alert Control Module produces or controls chimes and warning sounds and receives vehicle information over the network. U0160 sets when a control module does not receive the expected messages from the audible alert module for the required time, so some alerts may be missing.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Chime module unpowered
- CAN wiring to chime module broken
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Chimes or warning sounds may be unavailable
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for U0160 and other communication codes, and review freeze-frame data for low system voltage or a wider network problem.
- Check battery condition and charging-system operation, because low voltage can disrupt communication with the alert module.
- Inspect the audible alert module's power, ground, network connector, and wiring for loose connections, corrosion, or damage.
- Use a scan tool to check whether the Audible Alert Control Module responds and confirm which chimes or warning sounds are unavailable.
- If power and ground are correct, test the network wiring for opens or shorts and check the gateway path for routing faults.
- If the network path is intact, investigate the audible alert module itself.
Common fixes
- Restore battery charge or repair a charging-system fault.
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded module connector or ground.
- Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals.
- Correct a verified gateway routing fault.
- Repair or replace the Audible Alert Control Module if its power, ground, and network path are sound.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive if the vehicle otherwise operates normally, but warning chimes may not sound, so watch the instrument panel and respond to displayed warnings. Stop safely if a warning indicates a problem affecting braking, steering, or vehicle control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
