OBD-II fault code

U0082: Vehicle Communication Bus F + Open

What it means

A fault is detected on the positive conductor of vehicle communication bus F; the code descriptor specifies an open circuit. Which functions are affected depends on the vehicle’s network design.

How it works

Bus F carries messages between the modules connected to that network, using separate positive and negative conductors. The reporting module detects that the bus F positive path is electrically open, so messages on that network may be lost even if the negative conductor is intact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or damaged bus F positive wire
  2. Loose or corroded connector
  3. A module, gateway, or bus termination fault

Symptoms

  • Communication faults in modules using bus F
  • Warning lights or messages
  • Functions relying on bus F may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and save freeze-frame data to identify which modules on bus F stopped responding and when.
  2. Check the vehicle network diagram to locate bus F and its positive conductor, since bus assignments and topology vary by vehicle.
  3. Inspect bus F positive wiring and connectors for breaks, pulled pins, corrosion, or damage, especially where the harness was recently disturbed.
  4. With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test continuity along the positive conductor and check for unintended shorts to ground or the negative conductor.
  5. If the wire and connectors pass, use the manufacturer's network test procedure to check gateway connections, bus termination, and modules that could interrupt the path.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded bus F connector.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of the bus F positive wire.
  • Restore a displaced terminal or damaged connector on the bus F positive path.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway, termination, or module fault disrupting bus F.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives and only noncritical functions are affected, a short trip may be possible, but warnings or loss of connected systems can make it unsuitable to drive. Avoid driving if the affected network controls steering, braking, powertrain, or other safety-critical functions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
