OBD-II fault code

U0001: High Speed CAN Communication Bus

What it means

A fault has been detected on the high-speed CAN communication bus. The code does not identify the failed component or establish which modules use that bus.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The high-speed CAN bus is a paired wiring network that lets control modules exchange time-sensitive data. U0001 indicates that communication on this bus has been detected as faulty, but the code alone does not identify the failed wire, module, or vehicle function.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. CAN bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Poor connection or damaged connector
  3. Fault in a connected control module

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all accessible modules and record communication codes and which modules do not respond, since the pattern can help locate the affected network area.
  2. Use freeze-frame or event records, if available, to note when communication faults occurred and which warning lights or functions were affected.
  3. Inspect accessible high-speed CAN wiring and connectors for loose or corroded terminals, damaged insulation, or harness repairs, using the vehicle network diagram to identify the correct bus.
  4. Check battery and charging-system condition and inspect relevant module grounds, since unstable power can disrupt network communication.
  5. With the manufacturer’s network test procedure, measure the bus and isolate the affected branch or module before repairing wiring or replacing a control unit.

Common fixes

  • Secure loose CAN connectors and repair corroded terminals.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged high-speed CAN wire on the affected network branch.
  • Restore poor power or ground connections to a module that is disrupting communication.
  • Replace or reprogram a confirmed faulty module only after network wiring and power checks pass.

Can I keep driving?

Multiple warnings, failed functions, or limp mode can make the vehicle unsafe or unpredictable, so avoid driving if steering, braking, engine control, or other essential functions are affected. If only nonessential functions are lost and the vehicle behaves normally, drive cautiously to a repair location; further communication loss may disable additional systems.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
