OBD-II fault code

P2EBE: Crankcase Temperature Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit low fault on the crankcase temperature sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The crankcase temperature sensor sends a temperature-dependent signal to the ECM. P2EBE sets when the signal circuit is electrically low, which can occur if the signal is shorted to ground or the sensor or wiring has failed; the code does not by itself confirm that the crankcase is cold.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal circuit shorted to ground
  2. Sensor fault
  3. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough running or reduced engine performance

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for a crankcase temperature reading that is implausibly low or stuck at an extreme value.
  2. Inspect the crankcase temperature sensor connector and harness for chafing, crushed insulation, corrosion, loose pins or contact with ground.
  3. Use the wiring information to test the signal circuit for a short to ground and check continuity between the sensor and ECM as specified.
  4. Check sensor power or reference and ground connections, comparing circuit results with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the sensor and replace it only if it fails the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed signal wiring that is shorted to ground.
  • Reconnect or repair loose, corroded or damaged sensor terminals.
  • Restore a failed sensor reference or ground connection.
  • Replace the crankcase temperature sensor if it fails testing after the circuit is verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine remains smooth and has no other warnings, a short gentle trip for diagnosis may be possible. Avoid hard driving if performance is reduced, since the unreliable temperature signal can affect engine control and emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
