OBD-II fault code

P2E63: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve E Control Circuit Low

What it means

The engine coolant bypass valve E reports a control circuit low condition. Coolant routing on this branch cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Coolant bypass valve E controls coolant flow through one branch of the engine's cooling circuit. The control module monitors the electrical level in valve E's control circuit as it commands the valve. This code sets when the circuit reads lower than expected, often because it is shorted to ground or has excessive resistance at a connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal actuator short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Engine may take longer to warm up or show unusual temperature behavior

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check whether the fault appears during a particular temperature or valve command.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect valve E's connector and harness for corrosion, moisture, rubbed-through insulation, or a wire contacting ground.
  3. Check connector pin condition and fit; corroded or loose contacts can create enough resistance to pull the circuit low.
  4. Test the control wire for a short to ground with the valve and control module isolated as directed by service information.
  5. Test valve E's actuator for an internal short and compare circuit readings with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair corroded valve E connector terminals and restore a secure connection.
  • Repair control wiring shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
  • Replace valve E if its actuator is internally shorted.
  • Repair poor terminal tension or a damaged connector housing.

Can I keep driving?

If engine temperature remains normal, limit driving to short trips and watch the temperature gauge. Stop if it rises or fluctuates sharply, since unreliable coolant routing can cause overheating or reduced cabin heat.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
