What it means
The ECM detects a circuit low fault on the exhaust pressure sensor c circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Exhaust pressure sensor C measures pressure at a specific point in the exhaust system. P2E56 sets when the control module detects sensor C's circuit signal below its expected range, often due to a signal short to ground or an internally shorted sensor, and the resulting unreliable data can affect engine performance and emissions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may be on
- Reduced engine performance
- Increased emissions or failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live readings to confirm sensor C is low, comparing it with other pressure data under the same conditions.
- Inspect sensor C's connector and harness for damaged insulation, a pinched wire, corrosion, or contact with ground.
- Check the sensor C connector terminals and circuit grounds for poor contact or corrosion.
- Test the sensor C signal wire for a short to ground and test the sensor using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and procedure.
- Repair the confirmed cause, then verify that sensor C data is plausible and the code stays cleared.
Common fixes
- Repair a sensor C signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or replace corroded or damaged sensor C terminals.
- Replace exhaust pressure sensor C if it is internally shorted.
- Clear the fault and confirm normal sensor C readings.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads if engine performance is reduced, and have the fault addressed soon because emissions control may be affected. Stop if power loss or warning behavior makes the vehicle unsafe to drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
