OBD-II fault code

P2DF9: Coolant Pump E Stuck/Stalled

What it means

Coolant pump E reports a stuck/stalled condition. Coolant circulation through the affected loop cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Coolant pump E circulates coolant through its assigned cooling loop. The controller monitors whether the pump turns when commanded and whether it reports movement. This code sets when pump E is detected as stuck or stalled, so coolant flow through that loop may stop.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor or driver fault
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Coolant temperature warning or rising temperature gauge
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live coolant temperatures to establish whether the stall occurred with a pump command or rising temperature.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect pump E's connector, wiring, and ground for disconnection, damage, or corrosion.
  3. Check coolant level and look for leaks or obstructions in the pump E loop that could impede circulation.
  4. Command pump E with a scan tool and listen or feel for operation only where safely accessible, while observing its feedback.
  5. Test pump supply, ground, and control circuits using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and procedure.
  6. If the circuit is intact but the pump does not turn, test the pump motor and driver against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair damaged pump E wiring and terminals.
  • Restore coolant level and repair leaks or flow obstructions in the affected loop.
  • Replace pump E if it remains stalled with correct circuit power and control.
  • Repair a failed control driver if testing isolates the fault there.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the temperature rises or a coolant warning appears; stop safely and switch off the engine to prevent overheating. Even with normal temperature, keep travel short and gentle because the pump may not be circulating coolant.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
