What it means
During cold start, the engine coolant bypass valve C response does not match the cold-start calibration.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Coolant bypass valve C routes engine coolant through or around part of the cooling circuit to help manage warm-up. During a cold start, the engine control module monitors the valve's response and sets this code when its operation falls outside the expected range for the cold-start conditions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Valve sluggish at cold
- Linkage iced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Slow engine warm-up
- Weak cabin heat in cold weather
- Temperature gauge may take longer to rise
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data, especially coolant temperature and warm-up behavior, and check whether the code occurs only during cold starts.
- Use live data or the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to compare the commanded and reported position or response of bypass valve C.
- Inspect valve C, its linkage, connector, and wiring for sticking, ice or debris, damage, or poor electrical connections.
- Check coolant level and condition, then verify that the valve moves as commanded using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the valve and wiring appear sound, test its position feedback or temperature sensing and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Remove ice or debris that is physically preventing valve C or its linkage from moving.
- Repair a damaged or loose valve C connector or wiring.
- Free or replace bypass valve C if it sticks during cold operation.
- Replace a confirmed faulty position or temperature sensing element associated with valve C.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive gently if the temperature remains normal, but monitor the gauge and stop if the engine overheats. Slow warm-up or weak cabin heat may persist, and continued operation with abnormal coolant temperature can cause engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
