OBD-II fault code

P2DA3: Gear Shift Control Module B Overtemperature

What it means

Gear shift control module B reports junction temperature above protection threshold.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear shift control module B manages part of the transmission’s gear-selection operation and reports its internal junction temperature. P2DA3 sets when that temperature exceeds the module’s protection threshold, which may cause it to limit or stop operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Ambient temperature too high
  2. Sustained high module load

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live temperature data for gear shift control module B to determine whether the overtemperature occurred during high ambient heat, heavy use, or continuously.
  2. Check whether the transmission warning or limp mode appeared after sustained driving or repeated gear changes, which can help relate the fault to module load.
  3. Inspect the module B area for blocked airflow, heat sources, contamination, or signs of heat damage, following any manufacturer precautions for access.
  4. Check the module’s power, ground, and communication connections for loose or damaged terminals that could make operation abnormal.
  5. If the reported temperature remains high under normal conditions, follow the manufacturer’s procedure to assess the module’s temperature sensing and internal operation.

Common fixes

  • Clear obstructions that restrict cooling around gear shift control module B.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged module power, ground, or communication connections.
  • Address an external heat source or operating condition that is raising the module temperature.
  • Replace gear shift control module B if its temperature report or internal fault persists after the surrounding conditions and connections are corrected.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting becomes harsh, delayed, or unavailable, stop driving when it is safe and avoid demanding driving until the transmission operates normally. Continued overheating may cause the module to shut down and leave the vehicle in limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
