OBD-II fault code

P2D87: Fan 1 Control Module Over Temperature

What it means

The fan 1 control module reports temperature above the protection threshold. Sustained operation, high ambient, or cooling path obstruction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Fan 1's control module drives or regulates the first cooling fan and monitors its own temperature for protection. P2D87 sets when that module reports a temperature above its protection threshold, which may follow prolonged fan operation, high under-bonnet heat, or restricted cooling airflow.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Under-bonnet temperature too high
  2. Sustained fan operation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or cooling-system warning light may be on
  • Cooling fan may run continuously or operate abnormally
  • Engine temperature may rise

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live engine coolant temperature, fan 1 command, and any available fan-module temperature data to see whether the module overheated during sustained operation.
  2. With the vehicle off and cool, inspect fan 1 and its airflow path for debris, obstruction, or damage that could impede cooling.
  3. Check fan 1's connector and nearby wiring for heat damage, poor connections, or signs of prolonged high load.
  4. Use a scan tool's available output controls to check whether fan 1 runs as commanded and whether the module temperature rises abnormally.
  5. If the fan and airflow path are clear, test the fan 1 module and its cooling or mounting conditions according to the manufacturer's service information.

Common fixes

  • Remove debris or obstruction from fan 1's airflow path.
  • Repair heat-damaged or poorly connected fan 1 wiring and terminals.
  • Correct a fan 1 fault that is causing prolonged or excessive operation.
  • Replace fan 1's control module if it continues to report over-temperature with normal airflow and operation.

Can I keep driving?

Watch the engine temperature and stop safely if it rises above normal or a temperature warning appears; overheating can damage the engine. Avoid driving in traffic or under heavy load until fan 1 cooling is reliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
