What it means
The positive contactor D of the battery charging system reports a stuck closed condition. HV charging path cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Positive contactor D connects or isolates part of the battery's high-voltage charging path. The control module compares its command with feedback showing whether the contacts opened, and sets this code when D remains closed after it is told to open. Welded contacts, a driver that stays on, or debris preventing movement can cause this condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Contactor contacts welded closed
- Output driver stuck on
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning
- Charging may be disabled
- Vehicle may not start or enter Ready mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related codes, then compare the positive contactor D command with its live status to confirm it remains closed when commanded open.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect contactor D's low-voltage connector and harness for damage that could keep the control signal active.
- Check for other codes or live data indicating a stuck-on contactor driver, following the manufacturer's diagnostic sequence.
- Have a qualified technician perform the manufacturer's high-voltage isolation procedure and verify contactor D's state and feedback.
- If the driver signal is off but feedback still shows closed, test the contactor for welded contacts or restricted movement using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring or connector damage that keeps the positive contactor D command active.
- Repair the output driver if testing confirms it remains on when commanded off.
- Replace positive contactor D if its contacts are welded or it fails the specified switching test.
- Clear the code and verify commanded opening and closing only after the fault is repaired and the manufacturer's safety procedure is followed.
Can I keep driving?
Do not drive or charge the vehicle if the hybrid or EV warning is active or Ready mode is unavailable. A contactor that does not isolate as commanded is a high-voltage safety fault; arrange qualified service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
