OBD-II fault code

P2D3C: Cold Start Hybrid/EV Drive Motor Performance

What it means

During cold start, the hybrid drive motor does not deliver the expected torque or speed. Cold lubricant viscosity or magnet temperature affects motor characteristic.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid drive motor produces torque for electric propulsion and, in some vehicles, regeneration. During a cold start the controller compares requested motor torque or speed with the motor's response and sets P2D3C when that response falls outside the expected cold operating range, which can be affected by lubricant viscosity or magnet temperature.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cold lubricant viscosity high
  2. Magnet temperature outside design

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data for ambient temperature, motor temperature, and the requested and actual motor response when the code set.
  2. Check whether the reduced torque occurs only from a cold start or persists after the motor warms, and note any related inverter or motor codes.
  3. Inspect accessible motor cooling and lubrication system components for leaks, damage, or conditions that could affect motor temperature or drag.
  4. Compare motor temperature, speed, and torque data with the manufacturer's expected cold-start behavior using a scan tool.
  5. Have the motor and its temperature sensing system tested against the manufacturer's specifications if the cold performance fault repeats.

Common fixes

  • Correct a verified motor lubrication issue using the specified fluid and service procedure.
  • Repair a leak or fault in the motor thermal management system.
  • Repair a damaged motor temperature sensor or its wiring if testing confirms inaccurate readings.
  • Service or replace the drive motor only if it fails the manufacturer's performance checks.

Can I keep driving?

If torque is reduced or limp mode occurs, avoid fast acceleration, steep grades, and situations that require strong power, especially before the motor warms. Stop safely if the vehicle warns of a system shutdown or loses drive power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
