What it means
During cold start, the intake manifold runner control on bank 1 does not produce the expected tumble/swirl effect. Linkage stiff, actuator sluggish, or runner alignment off.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake manifold runner control changes airflow inside the intake to promote tumble or swirl, and the engine control module checks its response during a cold start. P2D2D sets when the Bank 1 runner system does not achieve the expected airflow effect under cold-start conditions, often because its actuator responds slowly or its linkage is stiff.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator response sluggish at cold
- Linkage iced or stiff
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough or uneven running after a cold start
- Hesitation while the engine is cold
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and check whether the fault occurs only during cold starts, noting engine temperature and any runner command or position data available.
- With the engine cool and off, inspect the Bank 1 runner actuator, linkage, and connector for ice, debris, binding, loose joints, or damage.
- Compare commanded and reported runner position during a cold-start check, if supported by the scan tool, and watch for delayed or incomplete Bank 1 movement.
- Check the Bank 1 actuator wiring and connector for corrosion, poor contact, or damage that could slow or interrupt its response.
- If the linkage and wiring move freely and are sound, test the Bank 1 actuator and position feedback against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Remove ice or debris that is binding the Bank 1 runner linkage.
- Repair loose or damaged Bank 1 actuator wiring and connectors.
- Free or repair a stiff Bank 1 runner linkage.
- Replace the Bank 1 runner actuator or position sensor if it fails testing.
- Clear the code and confirm normal runner response during a cold start.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly once warm and there is no severe power loss, short, gentle trips may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration while cold. Persistent rough running or hesitation can affect drivability and emissions, so diagnose the Bank 1 runner fault soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
