What it means
Pre-ignition events exceed a critical threshold. The ECM forces limited engine power to protect pistons, rings, and connecting rods from further damage.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pre-ignition starts combustion before the spark plug fires, exposing the engine to damaging pressure and heat. This code means the engine control module detected events beyond a critical threshold and has restricted engine power to protect internal parts.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Low-octane fuel under sustained high load
- Carbon deposits glow as hot spots
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Reduced engine power
- Rough running or knocking
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and available pre-ignition, load, temperature, and power-limit data to see what triggered the restriction.
- Check the fuel grade and refuelling history, particularly if limited power began after sustained high-load driving.
- Inspect for related misfire or knock codes and note whether rough running or knocking is still present.
- Check for carbon deposits or combustion-chamber hot spots using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
- If the event cause remains unclear, test related sensors and engine systems against the manufacturer’s specifications before clearing the code.
Common fixes
- Use the fuel grade specified by the vehicle manufacturer and avoid high load while addressing potentially unsuitable fuel.
- Remove excessive combustion-chamber deposits using an approved service method.
- Repair any confirmed sensor or engine fault contributing to pre-ignition.
- Investigate persistent knocking or rough running before returning the engine to heavy use.
Can I keep driving?
Do not try to overcome the power limit; drive only as needed to reach a safe place, using light throttle and avoiding hills or heavy loads. Stop if knocking or rough running is severe, because further pre-ignition can damage pistons, rings, or connecting rods.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
