OBD-II fault code

P2C6E: Drive Motor A Phase Y Current High

What it means

Phase Y current of drive motor A exceeds the expected window. Indicates phase short, stalled rotor, or sensor offset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The inverter controls current through drive motor A's phase Y winding, while a sensor lets the hybrid control module monitor it. This code sets when phase Y current is above the expected range, potentially from a phase-to-phase short, a stalled rotor drawing excessive current, or a sensor offset.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short between motor phases
  2. Rotor stalled - high stall current

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare phase Y current with phases X and Z to see whether the high reading occurred at a particular speed or load.
  2. Check for related motor, inverter, or rotor-position codes that could point to a short or a motor that is not turning as commanded.
  3. Disable the high-voltage system using the manufacturer's safety procedure, then inspect phase Y and adjacent phase wiring and connectors for damage, melted insulation, or signs of arcing.
  4. Have the motor phase insulation and winding condition checked using the manufacturer's test procedure; do not probe high-voltage circuits without the required equipment and training.
  5. If the winding checks pass, test the phase Y current sensor and inverter measurement circuit for an offset or internal fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged phase wiring or connectors if testing confirms the fault is external.
  • Replace a failed phase Y current sensor if separately serviceable.
  • Repair or replace drive motor A if a phase-to-phase winding short is confirmed.
  • Repair or replace the inverter if its phase Y sensing or switching circuit is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the warning comes with unusual motor noise, a burning smell, strong power loss, or a shutdown; stop safely and arrange recovery. Excess current can overheat or damage the inverter and motor, so avoid acceleration and heavy loads.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
