What it means
Phase Y current of drive motor A is below the expected window. Indicates open winding, short, or sensor offset.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor A's phase Y winding carries current controlled by the inverter, and a current sensor reports that flow to the hybrid control module. This code sets when the measured phase Y current falls below the expected range, which can happen with a partly open winding or a sensor reading that has drifted low.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Phase winding partially open
- Current sensor offset drifted
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare live phase Y current with phases X and Z at the same motor speed and load to confirm the low reading.
- Check for companion inverter or motor codes and review whether the low reading occurs only under load or across operating conditions.
- With the vehicle disabled using the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect phase Y wiring, connectors, and motor terminals for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Check phase Y sensor supply, ground, and signal circuit continuity and resistance using the manufacturer's specification.
- If the sensor circuit is sound, have the drive motor A phase Y winding and current sensor tested for an open condition or offset error.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a poor phase Y connector.
- Repair damaged or high-resistance phase Y wiring.
- Replace a drive motor A phase Y current sensor that fails its test.
- Repair or replace the motor or inverter if testing confirms an open phase Y winding or internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving to a safe place or repair facility and avoid high loads, steep hills, and hard acceleration; the vehicle may reduce torque or shut down. Continued use can leave you without hybrid assist or propulsion.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
